The Ledger Nano S is a Bitcoin, Ethereum and Altcoins hardware wallet that connects to any computer (USB). The wallet has a OLED display and two buttons that allow the user to easily confirm transactions. The Ledger Nano S is the successor to the original Ledger Nano wallet that was bitcoin only, and did not have a screen.
YOU must secure your bitcoin…When you own bitcoin, it is your responsibility to store and secure them properly. You cannot trust a third party such as a bitcoin exchange to store your bitcoins safely. In bitcoin land, if you don’t have the bitcoin private key, its not your bitcoin.
Latest generation hardware
When you own cryptocurrencies, you need to protect your confidential data and the access to your funds. You cannot rely on an exchange to secure your bitcoin! Exchanges are hacked all the time, and users are even easier to hack and are the bigger targets. If your email is compromised, often that is all that is needed for a hacker to reset your exchange password, and then gain access to your bitcoin. (Read our post: Why its a bad idea to store your bitcoin on an exchange) By having a hardware wallet, a thief needs to have the device in their hand to be able to take your cryptocurrency, or have your setup seed, which you need to secure.
With Ledger Nano S, secrets like private keys are never exposed: sensitive operations are isolated inside your hardware wallet within a state-of-the-art Secure Element, locked by a PIN code. Transactions can’t get tampered with, they are physically verified on the embedded screen with a simple press on a button.
The simplicity of the Ledger Nano S makes it a great choice for people who want to secure their cryptocurrency but either are not confident enough to do this themselves, or don’t have the technical knowledge to do so.
Why use a hardware wallet?
The main principle behind hardware wallets is to provide full isolation between the cryptographic secrets (private keys) and your easy to hack computer or smartphone. Vulnerabilities of modern PCs and smartphones are well known, and if you keep your private keys there (private key = your bitcoins) it’s just a matter of time before you’ll get hacked and lose everything.
Hardware wallets are convenient, affordable, portable and backed up by a paper wallet allowing easy recovery in case of loss. If you have any significant amount of value in cryptocurrency, using a hardware wallet should be a no brainer.
